Blood Bank Equipment Procurement When purchasing a blood bag centrifuge, the stated capacity is only the starting point. The actual number of blood bags processed per cycle depends on the rotor, bucket design, bag configuration and compatible accessories.
A centrifuge described as having a 6 × 1000 mL rotor does not automatically mean it can process six 1000 mL blood bags. The manufacturer must specify the actual blood bag configuration supported by the rotor and its buckets.
The key procurement question How many complete blood bag systems can the selected rotor process in one run, and is that configuration confirmed by the manufacturer?
01 · Actual processing capacity What Does Blood Bag Centrifuge Capacity Actually Mean?
Blood bag centrifuge capacity should be evaluated at three different levels:
Rotor Capacity Nominal capacity of the rotor and buckets
Blood Bag Capacity Number and type of bags supported
Capacity per Run Actual complete blood bag systems per cycle
These specifications are related, but they are not interchangeable. A rotor's nominal volume does not independently establish how many complete blood bag systems can be loaded.
| Capacity description | What must be confirmed |
| 4-bag configuration | Number of buckets and actual bags per bucket |
| 6-bag configuration | Complete loading arrangement for six bags |
| 8-bag configuration | Bucket layout and approved bag arrangement |
| 12-bag configuration | How multiple bags are supported in each bucket |
| 16-bag configuration | Complete rotor, bucket and adapter arrangement |
Do not calculate bag capacity from rotor volume alone. Request the manufacturer's actual loading diagram and the supported blood bag configuration.
02 · Blood bag compatibility Blood Bag Systems and Rotor Compatibility
Blood collection systems are available in different configurations, including single, double, triple, quadruple and quintuple systems. Their physical arrangements can differ even when the primary collection bag has the same nominal volume.
Satellite bags, tubing, filters and other connected components can affect how a complete system fits into a centrifuge bucket.
| Information | Why it matters |
| Bag manufacturer and model | Identifies the actual blood bag system |
| System type | Single, double, triple or multiple-bag arrangement |
| Nominal bag volume | Defines the primary bag's stated volume |
| Complete bag dimensions | Determines physical loading requirements |
| Satellite bags | Confirms the placement of connected bags |
| Tubing and filters | Identifies additional loading constraints |
| Bags per run | Defines required batch throughput |
If your facility already uses a specific blood bag system, provide its product model, technical datasheet or physical dimensions when requesting a centrifuge quotation.
Compatibility must be confirmed for the complete system. A statement that a centrifuge supports 500 mL bags does not automatically confirm compatibility with every 500 mL single or multiple-bag system.
03 · Rotor performance Why Rotor-Specific RPM and RCF Matter
A centrifuge's maximum speed does not mean that every rotor installed on the machine can operate at the same speed.
Rotor geometry and effective radius determine the centrifugal force generated at a given RPM.
RCF = 1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × r × RPM² r = effective radius in cm · RPM = revolutions per minute
For blood bag procurement, compare the machine and the specified blood bag rotor separately.
| Specification | What to verify |
| Machine maximum RPM | Maximum rated speed of the centrifuge platform |
| Machine maximum RCF | Maximum platform rating |
| Blood bag rotor RPM | Maximum permitted speed of the selected rotor |
| Blood bag rotor RCF | Maximum RCF for that rotor configuration |
| Rotor capacity | Actual bucket and bag arrangement |
04 · GlanLab product configurations Comparing Blood Bag Centrifuge Configurations
GlanLab's YD6MB and YD7MR illustrate how blood bag capacity and rotor-specific operating limits should be compared when evaluating equipment.
YD6MB · Refrigerated Blood Bank Centrifuge
A refrigerated floor-standing platform with a specified six-bag blood bag configuration.
6 × 500 mL blood bags 6 × 1000 mL rotor capacity Refrigerated
| Machine max speed | 6000 rpm |
| Machine max RCF | 6600 ×g |
| 6MB-1 rotor speed | 4200 rpm |
| 6MB-1 rotor RCF | 5100 ×g |
| Temperature range | -20°C to +40°C |
View YD6MB Specifications → YD7MR · Large-Capacity Refrigerated Centrifuge
A larger blood bag configuration designed for higher batch capacity requirements.
12 × 500 mL blood bags 6 × 2400 mL rotor capacity Refrigerated
| Machine max speed | 8000 rpm |
| Machine max RCF | 14550 ×g |
| 7M-1 rotor speed | 4000 rpm |
| 7M-1 rotor RCF | 5330 ×g |
| Temperature range | -20°C to +40°C |
View YD7MR Specifications → Important specification distinction: The YD6MB and YD7MR rotor RPM and RCF values above refer to their specified blood bag rotors, not the maximum ratings of the complete centrifuge. Confirm the exact rotor and supplied accessories on the final quotation.
05 · Temperature requirements When Is a Refrigerated Blood Bank Centrifuge Required?
Refrigeration requirements should be determined by the intended blood component processing method and applicable operating procedures.
| Evaluation | Procurement question |
| Temperature range | What setpoint range does the equipment support? |
| Temperature accuracy | What is the specified control accuracy? |
| Pre-cooling | Is pre-cooling required by the workflow? |
| Temperature recovery | How does temperature respond during repeated runs? |
| Electrical supply | Does the installation support the refrigeration system? |
| Installation | Are space and ventilation requirements satisfied? |
A machine's temperature setting range does not establish the required processing temperature for every blood component procedure. Confirm operating conditions against the applicable blood processing SOP and equipment validation.
06 · Equipment selection How to Compare Blood Bank Centrifuge Models
A useful comparison should evaluate the complete equipment configuration, not just maximum RPM or advertised capacity.
Bag capacity Actual bags per run
Bag compatibility Complete bag system
Rotor Exact model and bucket
RCF / RPM Rotor-specific limits
Temperature Required operating range
Installation Power, size and weight
Programs Memory and operating settings
Safety Protection and interlocks
Service Warranty and spare parts
07 · Institutional procurement What Should Be Included in a Blood Bank Centrifuge Tender?
Hospital and blood centre procurement projects often require documentary evidence for each technical specification. A model name or a general statement of compliance is not enough.
| Document | Procurement purpose |
| Manufacturer datasheet | Verify product and technical specifications |
| Rotor specifications | Verify rotor limits and capacity |
| Compatibility information | Confirm the intended blood bag configuration |
| User manual | Review operation and maintenance requirements |
| Applicable certificates | Check project and market requirements |
| Inspection and test records | Support equipment acceptance |
| Warranty terms | Define coverage and duration |
| Installation requirements | Confirm site readiness |
| Service information | Evaluate maintenance and parts support |
If IQ, OQ or PQ support is required, confirm the actual scope, documentation and service availability before submitting the quotation. These services should not be assumed to be included in every equipment purchase.
08 · Existing equipment Can an Existing Centrifuge Be Upgraded for More Blood Bags?
If an existing blood bank centrifuge no longer meets processing capacity requirements, a rotor or accessory upgrade may be worth evaluating before replacing the complete machine.
However, a new rotor must be confirmed as compatible with the existing centrifuge. Similar dimensions or mounting interfaces do not establish operating compatibility.
Machine model Manufacturer and exact model
Current rotor Rotor identification
New capacity Required bags per run
Operating limits Required RPM and RCF
Bag system Manufacturer and configuration
Verification Manufacturer compatibility approval
GlanLab can review the existing equipment model and rotor information to assess whether a suitable configuration is available. Any compatibility proposal requires model-specific confirmation.
